The poem illuminates on the impotence of war protesters. Even here, at a liberal arts college, the Iraq War peace vigils only gather at most 15 people (students and faculty). Others look on with disgust, as if our opposition was causing the failure in the mid-east. One student even remarked after being asked to join our vigil, "Sorry, I can't, I'm republican." At least he excused himself for his ignorance.
Perhaps some of us (like those on the right) assume that war is a human condition...it has always been and will continue to be. This ideology manifests itself into the popular culture and seduces the rest of us into thinking it is an accurate, albeit appropriate responsibility to "fight for freedom" and "fight for peace."
Unlock this hold and speak up.
Robert Bly wrote in his poem "Call and Answer"
"Tell me why it is we don’t lift our voices these days And cry over what is happening. Have you noticed The plans are made for Iraq and the ice cap is melting?
We will have to call especially loud to reach Our angels, who are hard of hearing; they are hiding In the jugs of silence filled during our wars."

Good for people to know.
