It's Official
Two cards are now in my possession that makes me an official Bellinghamster… a Bellingham Public Library patron’s card and a Whatcom County voter registration card, Ward 3, Precinct 231. During the past twelve years, there have been times when we have had no permanent address, no telephone, and no Internet service. But we have always had lending privileges at a library. When we lived on Middle Rendezvous Island we could order books from the Vancouver library and they would arrive by Rainbow Air floatplane at the little Surge Narrows post office where we got our mail. To get to the post office we had to traverse the narrow doglegged White Rock Pass in our Boston Whaler during slack tide. From the cabin in northern B.C., it was a three-hour roundtrip drive to the library in Terrace, but we could drop off our books in Hazelton at the Sears catalog pickup center - cutting our driving time in half. Now we are a mere five to ten minute drive away from the library and we already have a stack of books sitting next to each of our chairs. More convenient yes, but I must admit that I much prefer the scenic route.
